CONTRAFACTS are new tunes with original melodic lines, built on the harmonic chord structure of existing compositions which are in the public domain. As such, they do not violate copyright since only the chord structure is used.
OUTTAKES are tunes that were part of the studio recording session for the albums STEP UP and JUST ONE MOMENT. They could not be included on the final album track list. They provide interesting alternative takes to tunes, and some are originals tunes for which there was no space on the albums.
Beyond Beautiful – a contrafact composition springing from the harmonic structure of “Beautiful Love’, a well-known jazz standard composed by Wayne King, Victor Young, Egbert Van Alstyne with lyrics by Haven Gillespie. It is presented as a piano duo recording by David Rehorick and Miles Black.
Ziplock Bag Boys – an outtake with alternative lyrics to “Chicken Dream Blues”. This tune is a playful take on the situation two men found themselves in during major renovations to their condo, while they were living in.
Hoo You – originally an instrumental tune on STEP UP, it has reappeared as instrumental with Scat Solo by Steve Maddock on JUST ONE MOMENT. The outtake is a two-instrument version with acoustic bass and sax only.
